Recap: #BallNoir Classic Showcases Toronto’s Elite Hoopers

ballnoir-0675The Ball Noir Classic took place on Friday, April 17th at West Humber Collegiate Institute to showcase West Toronto’s elite basketball players. The all star game was followed by an alumni game from past stars of Father Henry Carr and West Humber C.I. In a time where many talented players head south of the border to finish high school and advance their careers, it was great to see the talent that stayed in Toronto.

Team Pink (coach: Ro Russell) trailed most of the game but kept it close with team Black (coach: Gary Durant) in a fast paced game. Tied with 5:39 left in the game, team Black pulled away with the victory 74-63. The MVP award for the Ball Noir Classic went to Marcus Bonnick, a 5th year player at Father Henry Carr.

“It boosts my confidence knowing Antwi chose me to play and likes my game. I just had the mindset to go out and go win the MVP. If I have that mindset all the time and know people believe in me, it helps me a lot.” Says Bonnick on playing in an all-star game such as Ball Noir.ย Marcus hopes the sport of basketball will get him a free education with his next steps being to play JUCO then go D1.

As for the alumni game, Henry Carr, known for having a top basketball program in Toronto for many years, dominated West Humber C.I throughout the game winning 79-61.
